August Wilson House

Arts and Culture

An interpretive plan for a multifaceted museum and community arts center dedicated to a prolific playwright.

The childhood home of Pulitzer-Prize-winning American playwright August Wilson in Pittsburgh recently opened as an arts center, performance venue, and house of history. Actor Denzel Washington, a major funder of the project, helped welcome community members to the vibrant new space in Pittsburgh’s Hill District.

August Wilson House chose Brocade Studio to guide the interpretive planning process, which focused on how to welcome visitors and tell the story of Wilson’s life, work, and neighborhood in a dynamic, multi-use space. Deeply inspired by Wilson’s non-traditional education in the Hill District, the Brocade team mined the goodwill and rich tradition of the arts in Pittsburgh to imagine the visitor experience.
